Annabel Lee – The Poem

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes! – that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

That Funny Love Story

Yesterday Anna called up. She seemed so distressed that I can even tell. For three good seconds, she didn’t speak anything. She has never been the person you expect to keep quiet. She said, “You know what? I am so done with this relationship. It is now another level toxic. I can’t bear this anymore now.” And then she started crying. I enquired about what happened. She said, “I think we don’t love each other anymore. Whenever I try to do anything good for him and his family he gets suspicious. He has problems with everything, from the time I wake up in the morning, to me going office, talking to people over the phone, and so on. He even has a problem with my choice of food I make at restaurants“. I just didn’t know what to say. I said let me talk to Eddie.

I just didn’t know what to talk to Eddie. I was preparing myself to call Eddie, just when my phone rang and it was Eddie. Before I just finished saying “Hello!”. He said, “You know what I am so done with this relationship. It is now another level toxic. I can’t bear this anymore now.” And he just started speaking even before greeting me. And this is so unlike him, he has always been the most polite and courteous of all my friends. I enquired about what happened. He said, “I think we don’t love each other anymore. She is always creating troubles for me and my family. From the moment she gets up, to when she goes to her office, even on the lunch dates where I try to find time out of my busy schedules to have some us-time that she always complains about. All she wants to do is create troubles for me”. I just didn’t know what to say.

I thought for a second, “Wait a minute, you said restaurant. What happened at the restaurant?” He said, “Nothing! Just her usual routine. We went to that Chinese restaurant near our office during the lunch break. There she said that she said that she wanted to have Thai food. We searched for one, it was a multi-cuisine restaurant and was around 3 miles away from there. She said that would be fine, she really wanted to go there. And as we reached the place, she ordered Chinese food”. I again just didn’t know what to say.

Anna always was a person who was a bit moody and spontaneous. Twice even before they got married we had to cancel our flight bookings for holidays, just because she wanted to go by road. And all the people she is close with, including me, just obey her, not because of any fear, but because she is one of the most wonderful people at heart. And Eddie, the exact opposite, he is one of the most disciplined people I’ve ever seen. He has a routine for everything and likes his things to happen that way.

These petty fights can’t just set the seal on a 7-year-old marriage and an 8-year-old relationship. That too when you have a 4-year-old child.

This is the reason I totally believe when the speaker of the poem says:

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

I have a question. Is it love when after petty fights you start to believe that the love between you is lost? Contrary to what I give credence to. I believe love is when you have faith in the fact that when even ‘nothing’ will not be there, the love will exist, even when you are lightyears apart.

Annabel Lee – Poem Analysis / Summary

Yes! there have been many famous poems by Edgar Allan Poe such as ‘The Raven’, ‘A Dream Within a Dream’, etc. But ‘Annabel Lee is still one of our favorite ones.

In this poem, the speaker talks about his love that was long lost. Lost, because it was so strong that everyone at the ‘kingdom by the sea’ envied it. The speaker believes that this, even though they were just little kids, love between him and his Annabel Lee was stronger and deeper than the ones between the people older and wiser than them. That despite the physical distance no one can part their souls from each other. Their love was real love and no teenage crush.

Important Words

Seraphs: In Kabbalah, the seraphs are the higher angels of the World of Beriah (“Creation”, first created realm, divine understanding), whose understanding of their distance from the absolute divinity of Atziluth causes their continual “burning up” in self-nullification.

Sepulcher: It is a small room or monument, cut in rock or built of stone, in which a dead person is laid or buried.
