Get it Up for Love

*****

When a conversation’s been
Had, and had, and had again,
Thereby understanding win,
Only to be lost again

Then the other seeks out friends
Bolster once again up their
Own habitual inner ends
Avoiding self seen as unfair

On points of willful blindness
He or she’s invested in
Self-satisfaction so to bless,
Complacency begin

Sense of superiority
The need to see selves better-than
More sensibly and adultly
Than such as yourself ever can

Delib’rately bringing it forth
Whenever in the mood
To denigrate intrinsic worth
Priority and attitude

— Eventually, you must stop
Hoping understanding for
Off that train of hope must hop
Close between that inner door

You did not feel perpetual
Need to make that other wrong —
You but defended we be free
To sing each one our unique song

Once explanations exhaustive
You’ve offered one, two, six times — all
Ending with our right to live
Each an individual,

Only to choke on curdling acid
Amid friendship sweetness of
A mind from sloganism flaccid
Can’t get up to respectful love
