Love in Church

*****

Love walked into an Episcopal church
Looking too beautiful
For her known social station

In sisterly sweetness,
She hugged the greeter

And enjoyed the morning’s
Free performance —
For free

While waiting for it, she
Made the joyful noise
Of unfettered happy laughter

Everyone was scandalized
(Those who weren’t
Didn’t dare say so)

— What were
Unconditional love
Beauty
And joy

Even doing
In that
Establishment?

They tossed Love
Out on her ear

And went back
To whatever it is
They had been up to
Before she dared show her face
Among them
