Maybe I ought to become
More ordinary —
Live my life more selfishly
Just shut up and watch TV

Go along to get along
Give up authenticity
See how close an exact clone
Of my fellow I can be

Take care to do nothing
Extraordinary
Nothing which will make the people
Look askance at me

Maybe then I’d be admitted
To acceptability —
Give up writing poetry
Beneath this homeless tree

Give up always trying,
Offering my very best,
And offer only what I must
Like most of the rest

Tease and flirt, manipulate
Advertise more than I’ll give —
Would my world afterward allow
Me peacefully to live?

I cannot say, for though that path
Shines with cushioned ease
No anywhere upon it
Do I find inner peace

And though I long, more than can say,
Some peaceful homely shelter for
For clear divine connection
I must ever long still more
